Importance Of Sports Essay-5
PROFESSIONALISM IN SPORTS:
Introduction: Sports have become professional all over the world. Men who have become proficient in certain games or sports have used their talent as a sure means of earning a livelihood. Since sports have got a spectacular appeal, people are naturally willing to pay for witnessing the exhibition of skill or strength that the sportsman has acquired. The boxer, the wrestler, the cricketer, the footballer, the tennis player, certainly have such rights to earn a livelihood by displaying their particular talent.
To make living: There is nothing inherently wrong in this. Surely a man has as much right to make a living by his brawn as he has by his brains. Professional sportsmen spend much time and labor in practice to acquire proficiency, just as members of any other profession do. Hence it is quite legitimate if they try to use their skill to earn a profit.
Professional sigma: Yet the professional sportsman is looked upon with disfavor in certain quarters. Being nonintellectual, they are relegated to an inferior category. The amateur sportsman is regarded as superior because he does not sell his talents for earning his livelihood. These prejudices, of course, are now dying out. There was a time when professional cricketers in England were allotted separate tents.
Today in the West, professional sportsmen are paid lumpsum amounts in order to add to the prestige of clubs and to earn gate money for the promoters. The conferring of a Knighthood on the English football professional Stanley Mathews has removed the last stigma on professionalism as such.
After a day's hard work in office and factory, it is good to fill the galleries of a stadium and witness exhibitions of strength and skill, in a thrilling encounter. The professional sportsman who plays to the dictation of the spectators really stands on the same level as the professional musician or dancer or magician. But there are certain off-shoots which deserve to be condemned.
Its recognition: If professionalism were recognized openly, this sort of practice would cease to exist. In some countries, officially people do not recognize professionalism in any sport, except perhaps in wrestling. but a player included in a Test Team earns a lot openly. Besides, he poses for advertisement photos and participates in cinema or TV reels, thereby earning a good amount.
He often plays with the lose shirt on him and with the bat or cap bearing the mark of a reputed firm. This is prostituting or vulgarizing the sporting talents. The patrons of internationally famous clubs pay handsomely foreign players. Romario of Brazil playing for an Italian Football Club, or Chima Okery, playing for Calcutta's Mohan Bagan or Brian Lara Playing for a Lancashire League Club is now paid lavishly. Steffi Graf earned lumpsum as a tennis star. This gives rise to many abuses.
Furthermore, those who are parasites of sports, the book-maker for example, - or 'promoter are the real villains in the world of sports. They earn an underserved middleman's profit. They have to be ruthlessly eliminated. The Olympics or Wimbledon Tennis do not recognize the professional sportsmen or players.
But there is one class of so-called sportsmen that no one should countenance; they are men who promote betting and make money out of the spirit of gambling that a capitalistic society encourages. They also tempt and try to corrupt players. Finally, sports that are brutal, - like boxing or bullfighting, should be stamped out.
Conclusion: Professionalism is quality is sports. A good sportsman can earn a reputation for himself and the nation.
